Today we celebrated my grandson Griffy’s 12th birthday.
It was the a glorious day. The the sun was out, the air was warm so it felt like the first day of summer.
Miranda organised a mini-party by her pool. She prepared delicious nibbles and we had a wonderful time, keeping of course social distances .


My contribution to poolside food was this Sicilian looking head which I named Filomena because it reminds me of the traditional Sicilian “Testa di Moro”
( Moor’s head ) .
The legend goes that during the occupation of Sicily by the Moors, a beautiful young Sicilian girl ( Filomena ) fell in love with a handsome Moor. They had a passionate affair, until she discovered that her lover was married with children.
In a fury she beheaded him while he was sleeping ( it definitely did not pay to cross Filomena ). To hide his head she used it as a pot on her balcony and grew basilico in it. The plant flourished and became the envy of Palermo. Other residents started to copy the head in clay pots to decorate their balconies and a tradition was born which you can still see today.
